The New Orleans warehouse/arts district continues to kick it up a notch with Mesón 923. The two-story architectural showpiece with an open kitchen is on one hand very New Orleans, but on the other reminiscent of cool cafés with tall glass windows in SoHo. Patrons can thank co-owner Astrid LaVenia for the high style that surrounds them. But the real focus here has to do with food. Chef Baruch Rabasa’s menu combines the local sensibilities of appropriate seasonings with interesting twists on items one expects from a New Orleans kitchen. Pan-roasted Gulf of Mexico fish is accompanied by rock shrimp and sweet corn risotto while a slow-roasted duck breast is served with a Vidalia onion-infused sauce. Sweetbreads are truffle-glazed and arrive with brioche-wrapped asparagus. Rabasa allows unlikely duos to share space on a plate in such dishes as duck confit and Gorgonzola ravioli. Patrons seated at a table on the first floor have a ringside seat to observe what goes on in the glass-enclosed kitchen, while on the second floor the distressed brick walls lend a real warehouse feel.
