 A counter ringed by chrome-edged stools pays tribute to this South End bistro's former life as an ice cream parlor. Today it's a nightly neighborhood haunt as well as a brunch fave; the clamor of an ever-animated crowd fills the small room, hung with star-shaped lanterns. Now breezy, now earthy, the Mediterranean-accented New American menu is always full of surprises like roasted chestnut soup with a foie gras croustade and Armagnac-soaked cherries, or roasted sardines over garlic-tossed escarole with black olive aïoli. And the selection of wines by the glass is friendly to wallet-watchers and oenophiles alike.
