| The elegant "Met,” with its polished and professional service, is downtown Seattle’s oldest steakhouse. Beloved by the steak-and-stogie set from the surrounding financial district, the restaurant draws patrons to its big, boisterous bar to track the Dow Jones average and down first-rate martinis. No wonder happy hour here often stretches long into the evening. Occasionally someone orders the chicken Marsala or Dungeness crab fettuccine, but most locals know better. Prime, dry-aged corn-fed beef grilled over Mexican mesquite charcoal rules. Steaks and chops are nicely done and available in petite cuts. Prime rib rates high, too. Appetizers are largely superfluous, although we do like the smoked sirloin carpaccio, even if steak preceded by steak wouldn't be our daily choice. Salads, sandwiches and chef’s specials vary on the lunch menu. If you must order something other than meat, the grilled catch-of-the-day is usually reliable. The wine list is long on reds and hard on the wallet, but you don't hear the business-types complaining. For a sweet finale, consider a chocolate martini---a real original that will surprise you. |
