Mezzaluna Restaurant Review: When driving south on Highway One along the coast south of San Francisco it is difficult to discern where Half Moon Bay begins and ends. What could be construed as part of Half Moon Bay may actually be El Granada or Princeton-By-The-Sea. Just past the tiny airport, a few small streets lead to a pedestrian-friendly block of restaurants and shops along the ocean. This is Princeton-By-The-Sea, where one can find Mezzaluna. The Italianate restaurant is done up in all the colors of Tuscany, from the creamy whites to the burnt ochres. Arches separate the dining rooms, both of which have ocean views. Pleasant staff share the neighborly mood of the small town. It is easy to begin the meal with a few nibbles like melon wrapped in prosciutto, calamari fritti or Caprese salad. Pasta courses include penne with house-made sausage, spaghetti with pesto and house-made potato gnocchi with Gorgonzola sauce. Dinner Italian-style means moving onto the meat course. Here, the classics abound. Try the saltimbocca, a chicken breast stuffed with Parma ham and topped with melting mozzarella cheese. Veal scaloppine is served with a mushroom-studded Marsala wine sauce. Those with smaller appetites may appreciate the pizzas that come from the wood-burning oven. |
