Dining room at Michael's on Naples Ristorante, Long Beach, CA

Michael's on Naples Ristorante Restaurant Review

: Along the romantic canals of the picturesque Naples neighborhood of Long Beach, you can ride in a gondola serenaded by real Italian gondoliers. Michael's on Naples Ristorante offers an authentic Italian culinary experience to match the environs. This is a busy restaurant with plenty of hustle and bustle. The elegant two-story venue's downstairs is awash in whites and golds, sensuous Murano glass lamps, and crisp linens. There's also a bar, "Chef's Gallery" room decorated with art that's for sale, and a table near the kitchen known as the "Chef's Table." Upstairs, a semi-covered rooftop terrace with a bar and crackling fireplace hosts a well-heeled local crowd that knows how to enjoy wine and lively conversation. Owner Michael Dene warmly greets his guests tableside, while Massimo Aronne, the charming general manager, draws from his profound knowledge of Italian wines to suggest ideal pairings. Executive chef David Coleman, who oversees both the savory and sweet arenas, sources farm-fresh ingredients and regularly travels to Italy to further hone his culinary craft. Start with the beet salad layered with mache, goat cheese mousse, hazelnuts and farro, then continue with housemade pastas like braised short rib agnolotti. Secondi may range from Mediterranean sea bass with artichokes, potatoes and Taggiasche olives to a whole roasted duck carved tableside. Among the desserts, the panna cotta is a standout. Five-course pasta or chef's tasting menus are also available, with the option of wine pairings. The wine list features a great selection of Italian wines, including Super Tuscans, along with some Champagnes and a decent range of California wines. If it's earlier in the day --- or you're just in the mood for pizza --- stop by the casual sister spot Michael's Pizzeria two doors down. It has become so successful that two additional pizzerias have opened in downtown Long Beach and Rancho Mirage.

Tasting the Season at Michaels

I have always thought Long Beach a Culinary Wasteland in the respect that we haven't had any outstanding restaurants with great food here. Now that has changed. About a year ago Michaels on Naples opened with great promise. The service was excellent as well as the wine program and stemware selection. The food was just ok back then. Their opening Chef left after severall Months and in came a young Chef Matt Poley. After working with Gino Angelini Matt seems to have developed his own style now including making his own sausages, pancetta, pasta and more. He sources whole wild boar & lamb and processes them completely in his kitchen to use in a variety of dishes. In addition it is great to know that Michaels on Naples is using the freshest in season produce from local farmers market. You can definately taste it in the dishes they create.
At dinner just last night we had three types of handmade raviolis...Chestnut, Pork Belly, and Mushroom. The first two raviolis were wonderful, the mushroom was out of this world good. Other dishes at the table were Organic Beef Short Rib and a series of tasty yet simple salads.
Michaels on Naples is worth the drive from L.A. or O.C. We have been driving to L.A. for years for good food and now for once we can stay local.
