In the 1990s, Mike's on the Avenue was about the hippest spot in town for cocktails and dinner. When it closed, there was citywide disappointment. However, when they knew the time was right, they reopened in the exact same location, but with twenty-first century ideas. Mike's is the kind of place where people meet for cocktails after work (ginger cosmpolitans anyone?) and end up staying for a leisurely dinner, or a series of highly creative small plate offerings (try the marinated sizzling steak with oyster sauce). Mike Fennelly's menu changes periodically, but expect distinctive combinations such as his lump crab and crawfish cake with Taiwanese noodles and Creole smoked sausage. Fennelly doubles as an artist, which is always evident in his exotic plate presentations. Fennelly brought Asian fusion cuisine to New Orleans in the restaurant's first incarnation, still evident with his saké-soy seared tuna with tomato ginger salsa and sushi rice.
