Momocho Restaurant Review: In a tradition-jarring step, Momocho, a self-described “mod Mex” cantina, offers artful, intense and upscale plates such as Wagyu beef meatballs and braised lamb shank with Oaxacan molé. Free of sombreros, piñatas and guitar-strumming mariachi, this bi-level restaurant serves up more than a half-dozen types of fresh margaritas infused with real fruit purée in tall, skinny glasses. If taste-testing sounds particularly enjoyable, try the guacamole sampler (we recommend the goat cheese, crab and pineapple variations), which arrives alongside a basket of warm, freshly fried tortilla chips. Follow it with the machaca taquitos and you’ll be more than satisfied with your meal. But if you get to the finish line and realize you still have room for dessert, steer clear of the clichéd fried ice cream, and instead go for the Mexican chocolate flan. With its spice and chocolate notes and sprinkling of salt, it’s the ideal finale to a very filling meal. The restaurant offers a large selection of fine tequilas, Mexican beer and Spanish wine.
