Monarch Restaurant Review: Chef Jeff Axline is putting his own touches on the menu and uses mostly local ingredients at Monarch, located inside Hotel ZaZa Houston. The historic property, now run by the ZaZa group, is a bastion of hip, over-the-top design that draws celebrities and rock stars from around the world. Power up in the morning at the juice bar and order breakfast tacos, a build-your-own omelet or the double-smoked salmon. The best place to eat is on the see-and-be-seen patio that overlooks the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston sculpture garden and the Mecom Fountain, which is illuminated at night. For dinner, start with the Saint Arnold beer-drenched mussels before moving on to the Nola shrimp and grits with a side of “kimchi-naise” fries. In addition to a full bar, there are Texas craft beers and a wine list that includes a Mumm Napa rosé bubbly appropriate for the Texas heat. To end the meal, the aptly named "Can’t Decide" sampler presents all of Monarch’s house-made desserts. Be warned that DJ nights and the Sunday brunch are loud and crowded.
