Monark, originally a nondescript eatery in a neighborhood shopping center, has been transformed into a sleek and polished space. The menu is filled with familiar items, but they are often prepared and presented with considerable care. You’ll also detect Thai, Malaysian and even Japanese influences on the menu. Start with crab Rangoon, pot stickers or Thai-style chicken lettuce wraps before moving on to solid renditions of kung pao shrimp or orange peel chicken. Better yet, opt for more interesting specialties such as grilled miso- and saké-marinated salmon, “jungle” Thai curry or a crispy chicken in strawberry sauce. There’s a short but entirely respectable wine list, plus Asian beers and soju cocktails.
