Mona's Cafe Restaurant Review: While there are a number of Mona’s Cafés in New Orleans, the original has always stayed true to authentic Mediterranean cuisine; it shares space with a supermarket filled with specialties from the eastern Mediterranean, and makes few concessions to Western tastes. The place occupies a former filling station (you’d never know it), and is bright and airy. First-timers are wise to try the sampler plate: baba ghanouj, grape leaves, tabbouleh, falafel and kibbeh. Traditional Middle Eastern dishes --- falafel, gyros and hummus --- are done with native expertise. Marinades and seasoning mixes are well-composed, too. Lamb chops and kebabs, prepared with succulence and just the right char, are made with fresh, good-quality ingredients. All of it goes down so much easier with a refreshing Lebanese iced tea, made with rosewater and pine nuts. For dessert, look for the classics of the region, such as baklava. The prices will put a grin on any skinflint's face. Mona’s does not serve wine or alcohol. Also located in Faubourg Marigny and Uptown.
