Peter McAndrews and Nathan Baynes of Paesano's and Modo Mio are behind Sicilian eatery Monsu in the Italian Market. With talented chef Damien Messina in the kitchen, this cash-only, BYO generates plenty of buzz for its authentic, earthy flavors and down-home vibe. A few highlights of the $20-and-under menu include the grilled slab of smoky scamorza (an Italian cows’ milk cheese) served with watercress and prickly pear purée and a memorably silky chicken liver crème caramel, with bitter radicchio, crispy pancetta and bits of sun-dried cherry. All the pastas are worth a second glance, with ingredients such as anchovy, shaved ricotta and capers emboldening the humble pasta with personality plus. Try the lamb "in the style of the horse" with olives, sun-dried tomatoes and fresh oregano. If you have room for dessert, anything with almonds hits a home run.
