Morton’s is just down the street from the state capitol, so it’s no wonder so many legislators and movers and shakers seek out good steaks in clubby surroundings here. It’s also within walking distance of the Tennessee Performing Arts Center and the Ryman Auditorium. The atmosphere is buttoned up but easygoing, with plenty of wood and leather, plus private wine lockers and comfortable chairs. Beef is the star of the show; it's of superior grade, expertly cut, and cooked by people who really know what medium-rare means. The salmon is also a good bet, and the side dishes are hefty. The wine list is extensive, with many first-rate producers represented. For dessert, try the molten chocolate cake or upside-down apple pie.
