New Luck Toy Restaurant Review:

The retro faux-Chinese façade of this West Seattle bar used to front just the kind of karaoke and General Tso’s establishment it now pays homage to and gently mocks. The main difference is that the current incarnation also boasts food from fine dining-trained chef Mark Fuller. Beneath a ceiling of red lanterns, diners order from a checklist featuring salt-and-pepper shrimp jazzed up with Old Bay seasoning, shrimp dumplings invigorated with pork fat, and hot-and-sour soup laced with maitake mushrooms. It’s a familiar roster of Chinese-American classics with a wry chef’s wink, right down to the desserts, which include Rice Krispies treats and malted chocolate with five spice. The drinks menu forgoes named wines (choose red, white or bubbles) but has a range of bottled imported beers and a few local options on tap. The real focus, though, is on the cocktails, which imitate the fare, offering frozen slushy versions of the Singapore sling, mai tais on tap and coconut mojitos.
