New Orleans Cake Cafe & Bakery Restaurant Review: The most happening place to be on a Sunday morning in the Faubourg Marigny neighborhood is the Cake Cafe. Affectionately known in New Orleans as “The Cake Man,” Steve Himelfarb was once bound for a career in the music business, but couldn’t deny his passion for baking. He started off selling slices of cake door to door in New Orleans. His Key lime cake with Key lime frosting will prove there is indeed something new under the sun in the baking world, as will a red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting that almost screams “New Orleans.” The pièce de résistance may be the pecan praline cake with buttercream frosting. The café serves breakfast featuring all the traditional items, plus good bagels, panini and even french toast made with challah and topped with orange pecan syrup. Lunch is light and easy with salads and sandwiches all on house-made bread, such as crab meat with bacon, melted Brie and sautéed spinach. Dine outside and watch the colorful street culture.
