New Orleans Cake Cafe & Bakery Restaurant Review: Affectionately known in New Orleans as “The Cake Man,” Steve Himelfarb was once bound for a career in the music business, but couldn’t deny his passion for baking. He started off selling slices of cake door to door in New Orleans. It all led to his Cake Café & Bakery, and if the aroma of freshly baked pastries brings back memories of your childhood, this place is for you. Himelfarb’s Key lime cake with Key lime frosting will prove there is indeed something new under the sun in the baking world, as will a red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting that almost screams “New Orleans.” The pièce de résistance may be coconut cake with chocolate coconut frosting. The café serves breakfast featuring all the traditional items, plus good bagels, panini and even french toast made with challah and topped with orange pecan syrup. Lunch is light and easy with salads and sandwiches on house-made bread, such as crab meat with bacon, melted Brie and sautéed spinach. Sundays are festive at the café, but be prepared to wait for a table; the neighbors have made this place their favorite morning destination. Dine outside and watch the colorful street culture.
