| In a manner of speaking, Steve Himelfarb---affectionately known in New Orleans as “The Cake Man”---baked his way to the top. Once bound for a career in the music business, Himelfarb simply couldn’t deny his passion for baking. One can routinely find him alone in his restaurant kitchen at 3 a.m. dreaming up new concoctions and perfecting those that have already melted the hearts of his loyal patrons. Those include a Key lime cake with Key lime frosting that will prove there is indeed something new under the sun in the baking world, as well as a red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting that almost screams “New Orleans.” The pièce de résistance may be the pecan praline cake with butter cream frosting. The café serves breakfast, featuring all the traditionals, plus good bagels, breakfast panini and even french toast made with challah, topped with orange pecan syrup. Lunch is light and easy with salads and sandwiches, all on house-made bread. This is an ideal place to frequent for a leisurely weekend breakfast. Grab a table outside and watch the colorful Faubourg Marigny street culture. |
