Owners Larry and Caryl Abdo have given this 100-year-old charmer---originally a sash and door factory---a fresh outlook. Located on an island in the Mississippi River, just upstream from St. Anthony Falls and opposite downtown Minneapolis, the Nicollet Island Inn is a good choice for a romantic meal with a view since the setting is undeniably cozy yet elegant. The kitchen (Adam Droski is now the chef) sources top-quality Midwestern ingredients and puts them to use in the traditional Continental fare: rack of lamb, grilled venison with spätzle, beef tenderloin with a mushroom gratin, walleye meunière. Of special note is the lavish and inventive five-course Sunday brunch, a $34 design-your-own meal with several beautifully presented choices within each course. The adjacent Nic's Bar & Lounge specializes in microbrew beers and pours a long list of small-batch bourbons and single-malt scotches.
