| Niki introduced San Antonians to sushi in the seventies, and her restaurant remained its most devout apostle until the later wave of sushi bars attached to Asian restaurants of any stripe. Thirty years later, little has changed, including the vinyl-clad swivel chairs at the bar, well-burnished by years of appreciative backsides. In anticipation of an evening of sushi and sashimi (yes the usual teriyakis and sukiyakis are available, but why waste your time?), we suggest a brimming bowl of champon---it’s ramen with an advanced degree, and teems with shrimp, vegetables, pork meatballs and noodles. Yes to a whole fried fish, which, one evening, was a diminutive mangrove snapper, pearly white, supremely flaky and served with a bracing ponzu. Some tempura vegetables? Why not---but don’t overdo it. If you ask for the best sashimi and sushi on offer, you’ll want to have a clear mind and a sharp palate. |
