| Nisi is one of the most attractive of the Greek fish houses in Northern New Jersey, but the designer need not have worked so hard. The most dazzling aspect is the fresh fish table with its array of seafood resting on a mountain of shaved ice. The menu abounds with preparations that make the most of fish familiar and exotic. Grilled whole fish, dressed with olive oil and lemon, is the specialty of the house and carved tableside by request for a bit of added drama. Scallops are wrapped in pastourma (a kind of Greek pastrami) and kataifi (shredded phyllo dough), and wild shrimp comes in a spicy ouzo tomato sauce with orzo. What Americans consider “Greek salad” is served but so are a host of other garden-inspired combinations. Service is well-meaning but not always polished. The extensive wine list is designed for the seafood-heavy menu although there is much to accommodate the diner who prefers meat or chicken. For dessert, we recommend the karidopita, a moist olive oil walnut cake with orange marmalade and whipped vanilla yogurt topping, along with a cup of strong Greek coffee. |
