THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED OakTown Cafe Restaurant Review:
THIS ESTABLISHMENT IS CLOSED The charm of an old downtown Oakland corner is easily enjoyed by a mixed crowd of East Bay locals through the two wall-sized corner windows of OakTown Café. The restaurant retains a bit of the bygone era in a restored floor mosaic, but resides mostly in contemporary Cal-Med sensibilities. Warm burgundy and ochre tones give an earthy effect to the airy, high-ceilinged room. An open kitchen anchors the opposite corner with a blazing, wood-burning oven that turns out pizzas topped with artichokes, aged gouda, roasted vegetables and house-made linguica sausage. Entrées like the stick-to-your-ribs duck confit with lentils and cabbage or the roasted fresh fish also hail from the wood-burning oven. Less-than-spectacular risottos and pastas are more heavy than hearty. The friendly staff shows an understanding of the menu, but misses on the timing.
