Smoke up a whole lot of barbecue, dish up some fine Southern fare and you’ve got Oklahoma Joe’s, a beloved barbecue joint housed in a gas station. The menu is scribbled on a blackboard; customers line up and give orders to quick-working staff stationed behind a counter. Ribs are rubbed then smoked until the meat pulls off the bone with just a gentle tug. Although the Carolina-style pulled pork topped with spicy coleslaw and heaped on a bun isn’t traditional KC barbecue, it does make for a fine and filling sandwich. Brisket is served sans sauce on a bun; diners can add as much or as little of the spicy, fruity sauce as they want. Beans are thick and loaded with bits of meat, while french fries come well-seasoned and hot from the fryer. Wash it all down with a Boulevard Wheat, the local brewery’s top-selling beer.
