| Never mind that Old Siam---like so many Jacksonville area restaurants---is housed in a nondescript strip mall. Inside, the restaurant offers one of the most beautiful, low-key dining rooms in town. Soft-spoken servers, white tablecloths and a décor favoring glass blocks and muted rose, grey and burgundy tones make dining at this classic Thai eatery a soothing experience. Thai aficionados flock to this sibling of Pom's Thai Bistro for the excellent pad thai, green and red curries and delicate fresh spring rolls. Creamy coconut-milk based soups redolent of lemon grass, galangal and lime leaves cleanse mind and palate. Specialties, like crispy whole snapper, can make an extraordinary evening out of a casual supper outing. For dessert, try the Bangkok ice cream, a rich, coconut-laced delight. Fair warning: Servers will ask how spicy you like your entrées. Unless you're a confirmed chile-head, stick with medium or lower. |
