Big windows looking onto Charlestown's City Square and the Zakim Bridge beyond; dark wood, wrought iron and warm hues; boisterous yet solid citizenry among the clientele: the flagship in celeb chef Todd English's international restaurant empire looks like nothing more than a comfy neighborhood bistro. Granted, these days, that's what it amounts to---which is fine by us. Robust flavors still predominate, but not to the point where they compete. Take razor clams casino modernized with lemon aïoli and polenta, or black-olive-crusted short ribs with roasted tomatoes and broccoli rabe---both of which keep the lusty accents in balance. That said, roast chicken with garlic glaze, mashed potato cake and green beans could use a bit more chutzpah. In short, Olives is no longer a magical place to be---but it's still got smarts to spare.
