Teppanyaki cooking is all about the show. That and impeccably fresh ingredients. Fortunately, said show, with all the usual machine-gun slicing and dicing, is just corny enough to make the basic product impressive. And the execution? Actually pretty good. The first course brings a vegetable arsenal into play, and despite the stacking of onion rings into a volcano complete with smoke and sparks, there’s only over-acting, not over-cooking. Sea scallops were fine, too, as was quickly grilled squid. New York steak paired with lobster tail is a combo option, and though (salty) flavors eventually come to seem a little similar, it’s hard to complain too vociferously. Except about an order of unexceptional sushi, or maybe the uneventful fried ice cream. From the kitchen menu come dishes such as the evocative Monkey Brain and Heat Attack, and there are the usual (and usually unrewarding) katsu chicken and teriyaki salmon. Skip them; the show’s the thing.
