Papalote Mexican Grill Restaurant Review: Just off the north end of the Valencia corridor, Papalote has a devoted local following. Known for being a "healthy" (read: less greasy, less cheesy) taqueria, there's almost always a line out the door. But it's the salsa that will really do you good. Papalote's recipe is a secret, but we can attest to charred tomatoes and spices that are blended into a salsa that isn't chunky. This smooth deep red sauce is a delight---thank goodness jars of it may be purchased to take home and spoon over anything (we particularly like it over roasted chicken or shrimp). Papalote's menu, hung above the counter, reads much like other taquerias, from the fresh fish tacos to the juicy al pastor burritos, but the quality rises higher here. Wise diners will try the chicken adobo burrito or the "triple threat" filled with chicken, steak and shrimp. A fine selection of beers, sodas and juices chill in the adjacent cooler. Paintings and photographs by local artists provide ample distraction while waiting for your order to arrive.
