Dining room at Pappy's Smokehouse, St. Louis, MOGo ahead, top your salad with barbecue. Pappy’s is the kind of joint where the concept of overindulgence wafts away on the aromas of barbecued pork, beef, chicken, turkey and sausage links. You might come in for a pulled pork sandwich but wind up with a full slab of dry-rubbed ribs smoked over cherry and apple wood, slathered in tangy, sweet or hot sauce, plus a couple of sides (skip the bland sweet potato fries in favor of baked beans). Or, to truly blow the day's calorie count, there's the Frito pie: baked beans, cheddar, minced onions and barbecued beef or pork atop a bed of Fritos. Owner Mike Emerson and company move things along quickly, right up until the meat runs out and the doors close --- it’s best to call ahead and place your order, especially on the weekend.
