For an area of town that is still pretty dodgy, Passion Cafe is a surprising oasis thanks to a charming rooftop patio. Greenery and brightly colored umbrellas help create a cozy atmosphere that feels removed from the rest of the neighborhood. On chillier nights, the main dining room in the restored 100-year-old building is an equally homey space, with its hardwood floors and large, handsome wine case that holds primarily Californian and French selections, most very reasonably priced. The menu runs the gamut of traditional French café food---think croque monsieur---to more robust meals, such as boeuf bourguignon and ratatouille. And, of course, given this is a traditional French bistro, one of the best things on the menu are the french fries, which can be further decked out with garlic and Parmesan. Sophisticated cheese and charcuterie plates are ideal for sharing during Passion’s happy hour (Tuesday through Friday from 4 p.m.-6 p.m.) since they are priced at $5.
