Dining room at Pete Miller's Steakhouse, Evanston, IL

This is a pleasing North Shore steakhouse, one that captures the necessary steakhouse trappings (white tablecloths, woody booths, private dining nooks) and nails quintessential starters like a wedge salad, oysters on the half shell and baked clams casino on the head. Aged steaks are the meat of the menu and are on a par (when not over-cooked) with those at downtown joints. We like the fact that they can be prepared a myriad of ways, from blackened to horseradish-crusted, Stilton-topped or with a Cognac reduction. There’s a broad selection of fish and seafood, too, and the menu plays host to dishes like grilled rosemary chicken. Sides and desserts are large enough to share. The wine list is heavy on reds, with prices weighted in the $50-and-up range. Nightly jazz starts at 8:30 p.m. Other locations can be found in Schaumburg and Wheeling.
