| Gastropubs are still the rage around town, and Philadelphia Bar & and Restaurant (PBR) is a notable addition to the pack. Founded by bartenders Shawn Gormley and Nicolas Moore (so you know there’s a good craft beer list and cocktails), the airy 75-seat eatery radiates a friendly, accommodating vibe. In a nice redo of a former butcher shop, PBR features exposed brick walls, original steel beams, and white tile left over from the days when it was Young's Meats. The kitchen, manned by Philadelphia native Jordan “Red” Sauter, last of Modo Mio, follows a comfort food mantra, with varying results. Sauter offers some fun pairings: hand-cut fries with Gouda fonduta, skewered chicken thighs with an ale glaze, and a tasty pot of mussels with sausage and bits of tomato scented with bourbon. His "diner" burger didn't cut the mustard, the beef was lackluster, and a plate of char-grilled octopus was charred beyond tenderness. We’d like to see a smaller menu selection consistently executed, but there are still plenty of reasons to come by for the game or a late night dish. Try the Tastykake bread pudding for dessert. |
