After the success of Seasonal, the elevated Austrian restaurant in Midtown, owners Eduard Frauneder and Wolfgang Ban have gone casual and downtown with this homage to the heuriger, the taverns found in the eastern Austrian countryside. The East Village is far from the Viennese hinterlands, but it wouldn’t be outlandish if you envisioned being transported to central Europe; the darkly lit, rustically-bedecked interior certainly helps. The menu is mostly standard Austrian fare executed well enough that it almost belies the relaxed surroundings. The wienerschnitzel was virtually devoid of grease (a feat in itself) while retaining a juicy interior; the cured pork belly looks a lot like prosciutto but packs a much more flavorful punch; and the creamy spätzle, spiked with mushrooms, asparagus and fava beans, is gemutlichkeit, coziness, on the palate. The wine list predictably looks to Austria, and the beer selection is topnotch, including the seasonal dark Czech brew Krusovice on tap.
