 Although part of a Northern California chain, Piatti has a homey feel, like the neighborhood favorite that it is. Kids are welcome and often seen dining at this fun, sometimes raucous La Jolla Shores gathering spot. Staff at Piatti is well-trained, and even though the menu changes often, they always know the food. Start with the sweetbreads (sautéed with mushrooms, garlic and white wine) and the grilled prawns wrapped in pancetta. Pizzas are thin and crisp; we like the classic margherita, hot and bubbling straight from the wood-burning oven. Pastas are fresh and accented with a variety of seafood and vegetables --- we prefer the ravioli stuffed with ricotta and spinach and bathed in a light lemon cream sauce. Carnivores will enjoy the herb-rubbed rotisserie chicken with mashed potatoes, and the veal-mushroom stew with gnocchi. For vegetarians, the farmers market vegetable entrée is a good pick; it comes with an assortment of roasted fruits and vegetables drizzled with a balsamic reduction. Classic Italian desserts are offered --- we skip the tiramisu and go straight for the chocolate cheesecake. Piatti also offers an extensive gluten-free menu.
