Radiator Whiskey Restaurant Review

: Squirreled away into an L-shaped space with big dining room windows overlooking First Avenue, Radiator Whiskey shuns the grand market view of its neighbor and sibling restaurant, Matt’s in the Market. Here, the scene is all about smoked meat and brown spirits, not the market's pride of fish. A two-part menu is dominated by the barrel-aged spirits and cocktail program --- a giant barrel looming over the bar underscores this focus --- with whiskey as the prevailing beverage, and an entire section devoted to variations on the Manhattan. These deep flavors are mirrored in the food, which skews away from vegetarian fare and opts toward big tastes developed in the apple wood oven featured in the open kitchen. The famous smoked half pig head (order it in advance) is the eye-catcher, but snackable starters such as cornflake-crusted chicken livers hold their own. Classics get creative touches as the plates get larger, such as the Sloppy Joes made of lamb neck. For dessert, in a twist, the warm chocolate cookies forgo the traditional pairing of milk in favor of a shot of whiskey, and a “debris ice cream sandwich” highlights trimmings from other desserts loaded onto ice cream and cake.
