Rangoli Indian Cuisine Restaurant Review: Rangoli is named for the colorful, geometric paintings---a form of Indian folk art---on display. With the help of intricate hanging lamps, carpeting and cherry wood paneling, the paintings soften the modest quarters in an otherwise obscure strip mall. Order by thali---a ten-item meal including dessert---for an easy introduction to chef Majer Singh Gill's kitchen. Thali comes in both vegetarian and meat versions with dishes that range from mild to mildly spicy. The five-page menu is flush with both Southern and Northern Indian options. Specialties include rice and lentil flour crêpes, fiery shrimp vindaloo, an array of meats from the tandoor oven and chicken tikka masala. Also featured are meatless dishes like potato halves stuffed with nuts, vegetables, cheese and spices in creamy tomato sauce and Indian breads from naan to paratha. While you're at it, try a thandai, milk flavored with almonds, fennel and cardamom that's poured over ice. The lunch buffet is a draw for nearby office workers and Oakland University staff and includes a wide variety of dishes. Indian import and domestic beers, along with wine and cocktails, are available. |
