| Lost in a nondescript strip of stores embraced by wrought iron, this unpretentious restaurant deals in topnotch fresh seafood. Among the appetizers, winners are the shrimp rémoulade and the crab meat and cream spinach in pastry. Oysters Rockefeller are properly prepared, dabbed with Hollandaise sauce. Seafood gumbo is thick and flavorful. The namesake red snapper comes in myriad styles: meunière, amandine, broiled, blackened, Louisiana (tomato sauce with celery and onions), Siam (sweet and sour with crab meat and mushrooms), and more. The ginger version, with shrimp, mushrooms and ginger sauce, is the signature preparation, and the ginger does not overwhelm the delicate fish. Various shellfish dishes and flounder also grace the menu, along with a few landlubber selections. Dessert is made in-house, and if offered, don’t miss the moist coconut cake, its toasted coconut coming from freshly grated coconut meat. What a shame that this food is not supported by a better wine list, wine glasses and service. |
