An appealing ensemble of reclaimed woods, exposed brick and industrial lighting summons a steady stream of locals to this convivial Russian Hill eatery. Executive chef Ryan Shelton’s (Palo Alto Grill) refined comfort dishes are paired with a refreshing and approachable line-up of craft cocktails. A substantial kale and beet salad agreeably couples the flavors of benne seed and balsamic. The poached farm egg in English pea purée is subtle and familiar. In his fried chicken and amaranth waffle, Shelton weds supple, boneless chicken breast to blanched kale and a waffle pre-soaked in butterscotch apple maple syrup. The bar’s Polk St. Pimm’s is effervescent; the fruit-forward Monk of Guadalajara and Purple Prose prove ample complements to many of Shelton's mains; and the Tikal boasts the leathery kick of mezcal and tequila that can open or close a meal. An eclectic collection of small-lot wines and a handful of beers complete the bar.
