Ristorante Capellini occupies an early Spanish-California building, one of two registered landmarks in San Mateo. Guests can dine on executive chef Paul Bourrillion's culinary creations in one of four rooms: the main dining area, the mezzanine, the counter or the wine cellar. In these dark, elegant environs guests choose from an antipasti menu of carpaccio, grilled polenta with wild mushrooms, fresh herbs and Madeira, vongole (clams), Blue Point oysters or bruschetta al pomodoro. Entrées include various pizzas and calzones, pastas such as ravioli with fresh basil-cream-pesto or gnocchi with shaved Grana cheese, grilled fish, steak, roasted chicken and veal scaloppine with mushrooms and vermouth. The rather high-end wine list favors California selections, with a few interesting Italian finds as well. Desserts comprise a cross-section of traditional Italian and American sweets ranging from zabaglione to a brownie sundae.
