| Ristorante Mamma Gina is a branch of a restaurant based in Florence, Italy. No surprise, then, that the kitchen turns out homemade pastas and such Tuscan specialties as deep-fried zucchini, spinach sautéed in the Florentine manner (with lots of garlic), air-dried beef from the village of Valtellina, squid ink-blackened ravioli stuffed with lobster, marrow-filled osso buco and bistecca alla Florentina. The surprise is that this restaurant can be inconsistent, ranging from topnotch to downright ordinary. But classics that are ordinary elsewhere are consistently satisfying: the spaghetti all carbonara justifies ordering this apparently simple dish in a restaurant; the mushroom risotto, too. Desserts are made on the premises and the wine list is strong in bottles from both California and Italy. The expanded wine bar offers an area for casual dining, and the happy hour is one of the best in the valley. |
