The country cottage appeal of River Cat Grill includes a flower-lined pathway and a sunny and cozy interior, sprinkled with bright blue-cushioned chairs. The staff is just as pleasant---and the kitchen aims to please too, with a menu that puts some inventive twists on standards from around the globe. Try the fried calamari tinged with almond, or moules frites, classically aromatic in their broth of white wine, chorizo, tomato, onion and herbs---they come with an unexpected roasted garlic cream. The mixed grill of bratwurst, pork tenderloin and chicken-black Mission fig sausage with braised red cabbage, apple-potato purée and rosemary-mustard demi-glaze, a sort of fusion take on the German traditional, is unexpected; then again, this lighthearted restaurant is all about a mingling of international flavors. You'll also find a slow-braised, rather than baked, Yankee pot roast with fingerling potatoes and rosemary puff pastry.
