Just a few steps from the Civic Opera House, overlooking the Chicago River and quite the spot for opera-goers, this restaurant provides a pleasant atmosphere, plenty of space and enough mahogany to give the room a clubby look. But don't read stuffy into that remark. We like to begin a meal with the fresh-as-can-be Maryland crab cakes or roasted corn soup with onion confit and red pepper cream before digging into the pan-roasted grouper with smoky chipotle-butter sauce. Steaks come off nicely, as do the chunky mashed potatoes. Beyond the basics, however, there’s not much happening here. Lunch becomes electric---that is to say, a charged-up mob scene descends from the Mercantile Exchange housed in the building. In contrast, dinners are welcomingly quiet. During opera season, dinner also is served on Sundays.
