Royal India Restaurant Review: Brothers Sandeep and Jagdeep Kambo are behind Royal India, yet another Gaslamp eatery featuring the cuisine of that country’s Northern region. Finally, fans of Punjabi fare have choices, and Royal India ranks highly. Selections range from the known (samosas, tandoori and vindaloo curry) to the exotic---makhanwala (smoked creamy tomatoes with buttery onion, garlic and ginger curry) and jalfrazie (smoked sweet-and-sour vegetables). What differentiates this food is its consistently complex flavor: tandoori lamb layers smoky mesquite, tangy yogurt and sweet lamb meat; masalas are subtle rather than overpowered by onions and garlic; and pickled vegetables resonate with the anise flavors of fennel. Even vegetarians can enjoy the Indian cuisine by ordering from the long curry specialty menu. Try the channa masala---garbanzo beans in a tangy tomato, onion and garlic curry sauce.
