The Ruby Slipper Cafe Restaurant Review: The Ruby Slipper Café has long been a Mid-city favorite among locals, who mingle outside and more than willingly wait for a table. This Faubourg Marigny-area outpost is situated in an old bank building that dates either to the late nineteenth or early twentieth century, depending on who's telling (or making up) the history, and it gets just as crowded as the original. Look for hearty egg and meat dishes, oversize fluffy pancakes with apple wood-smoked bacon, and brandy milk punches for breakfast. For lunch, start with fried green tomatoes and enjoy nicely proportioned salads and overstuffed sandwiches. Before you even think about leaving, say these words to your server: "Bananas Foster pain perdu, please." The original restaurant is at 139 S. Cortez St., 504-309-5531.
