Ruby's BBQ Restaurant is one of GAYOT's 2013

Ruby's BBQ Restaurant Review: Among the endless number of eateries in the campus area, it's easy to blink and miss Ruby's, an unassuming barbecue joint with friendly counter service. But the truth is, this is one of the few barbecues that stands out from the crowd. Austin music memorabilia adorns the faded walls and photographs of days of yore line the rugged tabletops. Although juicy brisket, chicken and sausage plates are the most memorable of the smoked offerings, the spicy chopped beef sandwich is a favorite among locals who require dinners with a little more kick. Coleslaw studded with poppy seeds and Ruby's home-fries with rosemary, mushrooms and peppers nicely complement the piquant sauce that you can't help but slather all over the meat. We’re partial to the mustard potato salad over the more typical mayo-based. Ruby’s (not to be confused with the Rudy’s barbecue chain) uses the only authentic brick pits in Austin, which, according to barbecue aficionados, requires extra time and care, but yields true brisket bliss. |
