A Mecca for carnivores who prefer their beef lavishly seasoned and buttered, Ruth’s Chris prepares filets that benefit from the seasoned-butter application. The best cut, however, remains the strip, with a tender texture and deep flavor. Steaks are of high quality and well-aged, and lamb, veal and pork also make the menu grade. Side dishes are gigantic, and the shrimp rémoulade, the house salad with its unique hot-paprika house dressing, and any of the dozen or so potato dishes are bounteous and tasty. As long as you are casting cholesterol caution to the wind, go all the way with Ruth’s banana cream pie with caramelized bananas on top and white chocolate custard inside. The wine list is surprisingly brief, but still manages to cover all bases, including a number of Cabernets and Pinot Noirs; the always dependable Penfolds Shiraz is a mainstay on the list. White wines also are well represented; Sonoma Cutrer Chardonnay is probably your safest bet here, and is big enough to go with a steak if you insist on a white wine.
