| All the usual suspects are available at Saigon. More than 100 traditional dishes---from commonplace spring rolls and satay to more exotic papaya salads and atypical egg rolls stuffed with shrimp, pork, crab and mint leaves---comprise the menu, which includes a photo of each item. The food is well prepared with delightfully fresh ingredients, making up for frequently poor service. Snappy bean sprouts, basil and juicy lime accompany simmering bowls of pho, the traditional soup. Vegetarian dishes such as lemon grass tofu sautéed with steamed rice pack a spicy wallop that makes up for the otherwise mild flavor. Plump local shrimp are stir-fried with snow peas and bok choy. The ambience in the restaurant’s two locations---one downtown, the other on the east side---matches the food: simple, clean and filled with greenery, lending to the healthy dining experience. Also located in the Five Points Shopping Center, 1230 State St. |
