| Anyone who has lived in San Diego for a while associates the Sammy's chain with its dependable, tasty pizzas, but the addition of eclectic tapas and artisan pies elevates its status. If you want to take a global culinary trot, start with the mini duck tacos or Mediterranean kafta skewers---Kobe beef with tahini sauce. We like the gourmet thin-crusted pizzas like the Manouri; its mild sheep’s milk cheese from Macedonia, redolent orange blossom and oregano is a sweet union. California-style pizzas call for barbecued chicken and Thai shrimp. Tapas like the Lebanese-inspired kefir cheese with herbed pita and fresh tomatoes, and Parmesan artichoke hearts with crisp cabbage slaw and creamy dressing round out the menu. You can't visit Sammy's without trying the messy sundae, a gargantuan assemblage of vanilla ice cream, chocolate sauce, whipped cream and caramel nuts. Alfresco dining around the fire pit is a nice alternative to the cozy indoor ambience. Sister locations can be found in the Gaslamp, Mission Valley and Del Mar. |
