Scopa Restaurant Review

: Blink and you might miss this sliver of a restaurant lodged between a bistro and a bar along Healdsburg’s main plaza. The name pays tribute to the lively Italian card game portrayed in a mural above the marble bar. Patrons in the narrow space string out along a crimson banquette, rubbing elbows at tightly-spaced butcher-block tables. Starters are numerous and easy to share. Try the grilled calamari with white beans and pickled onions on arugula. Be swayed by the spicy Calabrian meatballs in house-made marinara sauce, topped with smoky mozzarella. A handful of entrées includes house-made pizzas and pastas such as spaghettini with beef and pork rib sugo. Not to be missed is "nonna’s chicken" served in an iron pot with simmering tomatoes, polenta and sautéed greens, rich enough to share between two. Locals line up before the doors even open and vie for one of few seats at the snug bar. Request the single table just outside the door to feel like a VIP. The wine menu skews Italian. For a special treat, join Winemaker Wednesdays, when local winemakers serve not only their wines but also the food.
