THIS ESTABLISHMENT IS CLOSED The spot that was Bistro Banlieue morphed---quietly---into an even better neighborhood gem. This sophisticated American manages to trump its highly regarded former self despite stiff (if unwarranted) competition and an unfortunate location (a strip mall on the outskirts of Yorktown Center). Lush hues and fewer tables in the bi-level dining room---not to mention an ever-impressive menu---make the experience feel special occasion. We suggest veering toward executive chef Mark Downing’s tasting menu in order to zero in on the restaurant’s seasonal appeal. We particularly like the second course of Gulf shrimp with juicy, sweet heirloom tomatoes and pine nut purée. Yet, smoky Maple Leaf Farms duck breast marries beautifully with figs and sweet-tart cherry-balsamic sauce. We’d be remiss if we didn’t mention the harissa-spiked beef tenderloin tartare, a first course on the regular menu. While light on heat, the finely minced concoction with pita-like crisps delivers decadence in spades.
