Shoki Ramen House Restaurant Review: Cramped and tiny and dotted with Japanese knick-knacks, this authentic noodle house seems straight out of a side street in old Kyoto, not central Sacramento. The menu is simple, the star the thick, al dente ramen noodles, a far cry from the fried-and-dried variety to which most Americans are accustomed. Diners choose the broth, size, level of spice and toppings, which include thin-sliced pork, mushrooms, corn, egg or vegetables. Our favorite is the tantan men---a spicy broth with sesame-miso-infused minced meat. The broth is made in-house, simmered for hours, with no additives, and, as at traditional noodle houses in Japan, a filling, steaming bowl of soup can be had for less than $10. |
