Elbow room in the dining room can be sparse in this traditionally decked-out Indian eatery, and space on the table even less plentiful as generous portions of regional Indian cooking arrive from the kitchen. The menu is extensive, offering something for everybody, all of it prepared as mild or as hot as desired. A puréed mulligatawny soup is a fine way to begin here, along with pakoras, samosas and chutneys. Sauces from lamb korma or shrimp curry are mopped up with first-rate garlic naan and other breads from the tandoor. Chicken from the tandoor, however, lacks the nuanced flavors we have come to expect at L.A.'s leading Indian restaurants, though we have generally been pleased with the diverse array of vegetarian dishes. Sitar's lunch buffet and Sunday brunch offer exceptional value.
