| Some cynics sniff that Sonsie's long-lived success is due strictly to its location on Newbury Street, onto which its French doors open to provide a prime opportunity for people-watching. We beg to differ. Indeed, we admire chef Bill Poirier for taking his cooking seriously even as he ensures his customers don't have to. The frequently changing menu is always fun-filled, featuring indulgences like pan-fried catfish with fried oysters, crab grits and spicy mayo; Mexican pizza with jack, guacamole and sour cream; and a Guinness parfait with Bailey’s-infused whipped cream, as well as lighter options, such as two-bite tuna melts and salads that aren't afterthoughts (although we personally are against eggless Caesars on principle). Of course, as a major hangout, Sonsie works overtime on the funky cocktail and foamy coffee fronts too, serving the former into the wee hours while opening at 7 a.m.---unofficially, mind you---to pour the latter for its Back Bay regulars. |
