| Ask the average La Jollan how long this restaurant has been in business and the likely answer will be forever. Lucky types find themselves seated by the open windows (passersby have been known to stop to chat), which look out on a busy and rather glamorous scene that is quite at odds with the come-as-you-are atmosphere inside. Get interactive and build your own burger with choices of garden, black bean, beef, turkey or chicken patties. Pile them high with the usual fixin’s and other unexpected ones like black olives, jalapeños, bell peppers, rémoulade sauce, Thai peanut sauce, cucumber wasabi or spicy sour cream. The Cajun lamb chops are a savory starter, and the bounty of apple, pecan and blue cheese salad is plenty for two. Those seeking lighter fare may gravitate to the grilled mahi mahi fish tacos. Thick-crusted, sauce-less, tomato chunk pizzas pays homage to the restaurant’s Illinois roots, so if you like them Chicago-style, they’re spot-on. |
