San Francisco's oldest ice cream parlor---open since 1918---has a bright, shiny and purely happy-as-a-pocket-full-of-bubblegum-on-a-sunny-Saturday-afternoon atmosphere. And if it is bubblegum you want there is a deli case full of it along with retro candies. Across from the deli case is an authentic ice cream counter where you and your sweetie can order up banana splits, hot fudge sundaes and root beer floats in fountain glasses with two straws. The menu is an updated nod to the traditional American diner. Try one of the classics: bacon, lettuce and tomato on toasted sourdough or a surprisingly solid burger.
